Ulcerative Colitis Research Update

Inflammatory Bowel Disease impacts over 3 million individuals in the United States alone. Dr. Byron Vaughn and his colleagues at the University of Minnesota are investigating the impact of the microbiome in these complex diseases. Ulcerative Colitis (UC) is a debilitating and chronic condition where the immune system causes inflammation and ulcers in the colon. At Growing Hope, Dr. Vaughn shared three components that contribute to UC, Genetic Predisposition, Abnormal Immune Response and Inappropriate Environmental or Microbial Stimuli. FDA approved treatments for UC currently focus on the body’s immune response. Dr. Vaughn’s team is investigating how microbial transplants can target the underlying problem, gut microbiota. In a recent trial, UC patients receiving microbial transplant therapy saw a dramatic response in comparison to patients receiving placebo. In addition, when patients who received placebo initially, later received microbiota transplant therapy, they also saw benefits. Dr. Vaughn’s team is translating the study data and working to publish the results. Dr. Vaughn and his team are also leading a new multi-center trial using microbiota transplant therapy for Crohn’s Disease patients and plan to enroll over 100 patients through 6 centers nationally over three years.

Tim & Kathy Wise

Tim’s wife, Kathy, shared, “I feel God sent Dr. Khoruts to us not only to save Tim, but to save me too. In total during this process, my husband was diagnosed with West Nile Disease, Encephalitis, Aspiration Pneumonia, fulminant and very severe C. difficile infection, inflammation of the colon, medical sepsis and profound shock. Tim was slowly improving after each microbiota transplant, but finally after the fourth colonoscopy transplant was when he made more significant improvement. Tim still had a journey for recovery including recovery centers, a feeding tube placed in his stomach, and a specific type of antibiotics that wouldn’t bring back the C. diff. Tim finally was able to come home in mid February of this year, six months after our difficult journey started. Tim is still recovering, making small improvements and gaining back pieces of his independence, including recently starting driving again. This is my testimony of Growing Hope.” Watch Tim & Kathy’s story at: www.achievingcures.com/stories/tim-kathys-story.

Twin Cities Marathon

ACT’s race team hit the pavement on October 6th for our 9th Twin Cities Marathon weekend and 6th year as an official charity partner. Our race team members dedicate their time, sweat, and occasionally blood and tears to support microbiota treatments for patients and research. Since 2016, over 100 runners have joined our team ranks and have raised over $350,000. Thank you for your commitment to saving lives and advancing research!

Heading

This is some text inside of a div block.

What’s a Rich Text element?

The rich text element allows you to create and format headings, paragraphs, blockquotes, images, and video all in one place instead of having to add and format them individually. Just double-click and easily create content.

Static and dynamic content editing

A rich text element can be used with static or dynamic content. For static content, just drop it into any page and begin editing. For dynamic content, add a rich text field to any collection and then connect a rich text element to that field in the settings panel. Voila!

How to customize formatting for each rich text

Headings, paragraphs, blockquotes, figures, images, and figure captions can all be styled after a class is added to the rich text element using the "When inside of" nested selector system.
