University of Minnesota Microbiota Therapeutics Program
Where it all began.
Founded in 2012, the Microbiota Therapeutics Program (MTP) was the first of its kind, heralding a new frontier of medicine that uses next-generation microbiota-based therapeutics to treat recurrent, antibiotic-resistant C. difficile and other diseases. It builds on the pioneering work of Dr. Alexander Khoruts, Professor of Medicine in the Division of Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition at the University of Minnesota Medical School, who performed the first verified microbiota transplant via colonoscopy in 2012. Since then, the treatment has evolved into a capsule-based and drinkable liquid therapies that have shown an over 90% success rate in treating C. difficile infections.
ACT has developed a meaningful partnership with MTP to support the harvesting of intact, healthy microbiota from thoroughly screened stool donors and processing it into treatments. These have been adapted worldwide, curing tens of thousands of patients suffering from intractable Clostridium difficile infections, a superbug formed from a compilation of antibiotic treatments. This potentially fatal infection is most often due to a complication of antibiotic treatments, leading to the formation of a resistant “superbug” type of C. difficile. Additionally, these treatments are also being used to advance medical care through clinical trials led by partner investigators and academic institutions throughout the United States.
